Nothing "in-depth" at all, October 13, 2012 This review is from: Troubleshoot and Optimize Windows 8 Inside Out: The ultimate, in-depth troubleshooting and optimizing reference (Paperback) Be warned. If you even consider yourself a semi IT professional, you would do yourself a favor and skip this book as you will barely gain any knowledge after having read through it. The reason being is that there is rarely anything I would consider "in-depth" at all. I expected some heavy tips and guides to troubleshooting Windows 8 issues. What I got instead was tips on how to use the myriad of built-in diagnostic tools baked in the operating system and rarely does it venture outside of that. That's right. This is another one of those technical books that talks to you about how to use Device Manager as if you've never seen it a thousand times prior to Windows 8. Already know what a firewall is? Well too bad because all you'll learn to do here is how to configure the built-in Windows firewall to set up a basic outbound rule. Want to know how to get technical with the Event Viewer? Sorry, that ain't happening here. Want to know how to troubleshoot Storage Spaces, possibly one of the... Read more

Book for IT Pros, October 5, 2012 By This review is from: Troubleshoot and Optimize Windows 8 Inside Out: The ultimate, in-depth troubleshooting and optimizing reference (Paperback) This book provides great insight to Microsofts latest OS, Windows 8. As a help desk tech, reading this book gave me the knowledge and hands on experience needed to learn the changes in Windows 8. Windows 8 provides lots of great improvements, such as the task manager that will make troubleshooting easier in my opinion. This book details those types of improvements. If you work in IT or have basic computer skills and want to learn more about Windows 8, this book is for you!

The removal of the start menu is a catastophic mistake in my view, so much so that I have installed the free version of Win8Starter to make it possible to navigate around W8 on my old PC.
I do not think for an ordinary PC W8 offers any advantages over W7.To use it effectively you need one of the new touch screen laptops or notebooks.
That however, has nothing to do with Mike Halse's book or its excellance for the purpose, so over to that issue.
The book provides a good means of finding your way around and troubleshooting problems with the operating system. As I said earlier unless you are prepared to put it on a touch screen machine Windows 8 is too hard too use so really you have to upgrade the hardware you use to go with the new operating system otherwise it is a waste of time for the user of an old PC like I am. To close the book itself is fit for the purpose and well written.
