3.0 out of 5 stars New Tech and New Look, for Hardware New and Old, October 26, 2012

This review is from: Windows 8 System Builder DVD 64-Bit (DVD-ROM)
The "System Builder" discs of Windows 8 are named this way because they are a full install and not an upgrade. The assumption is that you are building your own machine and looking to put Windows 8 on a from-scratch install, but this is still a multi-boot friendly OS and if your intention instead is to install a full copy of Windows 8 without upgrading your current system, well, that works too: you can put this on old hardware so long as your machine meets the system requirements. There has been some confusion at the lack of an 'OEM' SKU for Windows, so I suspect that until we hear otherwise, this is our 'OEM' substitute for those of us who like to tinker with hardware.

If you're considering Windows 8, there are benefits many small and large. The patchwork way in which the OS seems to meld old into new can be confusing, and it's clear the UI pays lip service to mice while eagerly awaiting your first touch-screen or touch-pad purchase. But to give credit where credit is... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Fresh Install Fresh Start, November 3, 2012

Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Windows 8 System Builder DVD 64-Bit (DVD-ROM)
I was leery of Microsoft's new Modern UI (formerly known as "Metro") and their decision to remove the Start button. But the boost in performance and the low cost was enough for me to spring on this new version.

First let me say I've never done a Windows "upgrade". By that I mean install the latest OS on top of the current one. It may not be a big issue these days, but old habits die hard and I just prefer to start with a clean slate.

That said the install went flawlessly. Windows 8 was up and running in 15 minutes, a marked improvement from previous versions. And booting into Windows from a cold boot takes about 10 seconds, another great improvement.

But let's talk about the most critical issues of Windows 8. While I applaud Microsoft for taking a risk and trying to blend their OS's (desktop with portable), I do agree with others that there is room for improvement when it comes to a desktop system. Of course I'm referring to the Modern UI. For a... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Makes you work harder than necessary, December 3, 2012

This review is from: Windows 8 System Builder DVD 64-Bit (DVD-ROM)
My old Windows PC was dying so I thought it was time to upgrade. But to put it simply, I wish I hadn't. Windows 8 is trying to be a tablet & a PC at the same time & for buyers like me who own an ipad but want a PC to do the heavier work, it just doesn't work. The main problem is that there is an extra start screen & in order to get to the desktop, you must first touch or click on the desktop tile. While this may seem like nothing, while you're working on the computer, it's a major pain, requiring you to go through more steps to accomplish the same tasks. I also don't know if it's the computer, but sometimes when I lightly touch a key in desktop mode, it takes me to the Start screen when I don't want to go there.

The Start screen itself is also not practical when you are using it primarily as a PC, not to mention its unattractiveness with those arbitrarily-sized tiles. The tiles don't all fit on the screen so you have to scroll sideways to get to the apps that you... Read more
