Best way to start Windows 8 development, December 26, 2012 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Windows 8 Apps with HTML5 and JavaScript Unleashed (Paperback) I am a developer and have been working on my own Windows 8 app for quite some time. I've found that the documentation available from Microsoft, while vast, is very unapproachable. Even for those that are very familiar with HTML5/JS will likely run into trouble when starting out with Win8 development.
When I started, my instinct was to jump to practices I had been following for apps on other platforms, relying heavily on jQuery. However, I soon discovered that there were some limitations to what I could do with jQuery (Win8 security policies in place to prevent script injection) and could not find many answers on this, even on the MSDN forums. This book talks about jQuery right away and answered all my questions...awesome!
I found the book extremely easy to read and follow, and much more engaging than any other development book I have read. After just a couple days of ownership, I'm on chapter 7. Now, having learned so much more about WinJS and Win8... Read more

Really I like the layout of the book and the content on it. The examples are short and the pictures draws the attention. Concepts are explained very clearly. Examples and pictures are so capturing that you will be hardly distracted while reading.

I'm trying to grasp the whole Javascript OOP / WinJS programming paradigm. (Method Chaining, Promises...) Coming from an object oriented background, this has been a brain bender and this book isn't really helping me make the transition.
I've contemplated going the SilverLight route for building Metro Apps, but I see JS in so many other places I thought I'd put the screws to myself and learn WinJS thinking I could use those skills in other places. (Knockout.js, Titanium)
I've gotten many of Stephens books. They've helped me an innumerable amount of times. I'm really grateful for his work. But this book is a bummer. Code listings don't have Line Numbers and do not have explicit explanations of "what, why and how". It's definitely not the usual "Unleashed" caliber of his past books (ASP.NET).
That said, it's a good book, but don't think that you're going to be up to speed with this book alone.
